Why and How Should I Get Custom Orthotics?

Custom Orthotics Relieve Pain and Improve Motion

If you have neck, arm, leg, or back pain, you probably think treatment has to focus on those areas. However, those symptoms often stem from conditions caused partly by poor body and foot alignment. Your feet are your foundation, and a lack of proper arch support forces your body to shift its weight a certain way to compensate. This leads to problems further up the body. One way Algonquin Chiropractic Center addresses those problems at the root is with custom orthotics.

Custom orthotic shoe inserts are an effective tool to relieve pain and improve motion when treating conditions like sciatica, spinal stenosis, and low back pain. Read on to learn how custom orthotics help, and how Algonquin Chiropractic Center supplies you with orthotics designed for your specific foot shape and condition.

Running – Can Your Knees Take 3000lbs

Did You Know…

The Journal of Biomechanics reports forces as high as 5 G on the lower leg during walking. That translates into an impact force of 5 times your body weight! A 200 lb person can expect to put 1000 lbs of force through their lower extremity with every step! Those forces translate all the way up to the base of the skull where researchers have measured forces of .5 G. This translates into 100 lbs of force going through the skull with every step! Running increases these forces triple-fold! That same 200 lb person can have impact forces as high as 3000 lbs in their lower extremity while running!

Running is the most common activity in all sports.  Few people realize the impact your lower body takes while running.  This increase stress over time can lead to overuse injuries.  How can you minimize your risk for injury?Running by Algonquin Chiropractic Center

  1. Maintain ideal body weight to decrease impact forces through your lower extremity and spine.
  1. Avoid the new “minimalist” shoes. They offer little support and a recent study at Brigham Young University found over 50% of experienced runners using minimalist shoes had MRI signs of foot injury.
  1. Do use a good pair of running shoes and replace them often, a good rule of thumb is every 300-400 miles.
  1. For non-runners a good shoe with a thick sole providing adequate support is preferable to slip on shoes with poor support.
  1. Custom made orthotics, specifically designed for your foot, offer the most comprehensive support to correct biomechanical abnormalities and provide shock absorption.
  1. If you are just starting to run, start with a run/walk on a soft track or grass.  Slowly increase your time of running and decrease walking.

Remember health is a journey and not a destination. What you do in the practice of health care will go miles and pay dividends over time.

A Simple Fix for a Chronic Condition: Orthotics in Algonquin

A Simple Fix for a Chronic Condition: Orthotics in Algonquin

Did you know that 25% of all the bones in the body are located in the feet! A very complex mechanism that enables proper locomotion and can have enormous effects on posture.

Foot Issues by Algonquin Chiropractic CenterDr. Galante is Committed to Helping You!

We are sharing this information with you to keep you informed, improve your health and well-being and help you understand critical health care information and how it impacts your health and your wallet. So what are the implications?

Faulty foot bio-mechanics can cause numerous painful conditions not only in the feet but also in the knees, hips, back and neck.

The most common distortion is when the foot rolls inward (pronation) which causes the knee to roll inward, internally rotates the hips and may cause the pelvis to be un-level with resultant spinal curvatures. The body is very good at compensating for these bio-mechanical imbalances, and sometimes for a long period of time, but when these compensatory mechanisms fail, that’s when the neck, back, knee or hip pain starts.

Try this: Stand up with you weight equal on both feet, put your index finger on your hip bones (the large bones on side of your upper leg), now stand with your weight on the inside of your foot, then roll to the outside of your foot. You will feel that bone move, now you can “feel” the connection between your foot alignment and your hips (and also your knees and low back.)

The only way to “correct” pronation is to properly support your feet with custom made orthotics (shoe inserts). Since your foot alignment is Orthotics by Algonquin Chiropractic Centerabnormal, we “bring the shoe to your foot,” to properly support the 3 arches of your feet. Orthotics will not only be beneficial for your feet, but they will also improve posture.

In my experience, after patients get used to their orthotics, which can be anywhere from immediately to 3 weeks, they LOVE them. They have never been properly supported in the past, for the first time there is proper support in all 3 arches of the foot, which will also put the knees, hips and spine in better alignment.

A few orthotic guidelines:

*Ask if your orthotic supports all 3 arches of the foot, not just the inside arch.

*They MUST be comfortable. Be very leary of hard plastic orthotics, they are often very uncomfortable.

*Wearing orthotics should go through a “break-in” period which usually doesn’t last more than a few week.

*Orthotics are very low maintenance, put them in your shoes and forget them! Proper Footwear by Algonquin Chiropractic Center
