Spinal Stenosis X-RaySurgery and more conservative treatments provide similar long-term outcomes for people with spinal stenosis, a new study suggests. The study included more than 650 spinal stenosis patients who had surgery or received nonsurgical treatment such as chiropractic, physical therapy or medications.

Both surgery and more conservative treatments were safe, according to the researchers. Of the patients who had surgery, 18 percent had repeat surgery for recurrent spinal stenosis within eight years, said study leader Dr. Jon Lurie and colleagues in a journal news release.

The findings provide important information for patients and doctors when considering treatments for spinal stenosis, the researchers said.

Consider COX Technique for stenosis.  A non-surgical, hands-on, decompression technique that gently relieves the pressure on sensitive discs and nerves.  Excellent results.

Home exercises such as the cat/camel, knee/chest and sit and reach may be beneficial between visits for stenosis patients, swimming is usually helpful also.

An anti-inflammatory diet may help in the long term as well as targeted nutritional supplements to control inflammation and promote soft tissue healing.

These are just a few of the techniques we use to get people out of pain and on with their active lifestyle!

Back pain is epidemic. Back surgery rates have skyrocketed since the 1990’s. Why? Listen to what a prominent researcher says, “there is little evidence spinal surgery is associated with improved outcomes.”

With new surgical techniques and an increase in surgeons, surgery is being recommended and performed at an alarming rate. Surgery comes with numerous potential complications, a significant recovery time and a significant cost. And considering failed back surgery rates approach 40-60% your best bet is to avoid surgery. How?

Here are some tips:

  1. Diet and Nutrition – Follow an “anti-inflammatory” diet and maintaining a healthy body weight.
  2. Exercise – Low impact aerobic cardio and core strengthening exercises.
  3. Sleep – You spend a third of your life asleep, make sure you have a good mattress.
  4. .Lifestyle modification – Prolonged periods of sitting, smoking, obesity, heavy lifting and sedentary lifestyle have all been implicated in lower back pain.
  5. Spinal Health – Regular chiropractic visits maintain spinal mobility, decrease pressure on sensitive disc and nerve tissue and improves your immunity.
