Find Out What’s Causing Your Lower Back Pain

“What causes lower back pain?” Our patients often ask us this question, hoping for a simple answer. However, back pain doesn’t have one common cause. Instead, several conditions could be the source of the issue, including:

Chiropractor treating lower back pain

Most back pain is idiopathic, meaning it doesn’t have a clear origin. Instead, the problem worsens over time until it becomes apparent one day. Low back pain can also have a clear cause, such as improper bending and lifting or a traumatic injury.

No matter what type of back pain you have, diagnosing the exact cause is the essential first step to pain relief. Pain pills will only mask the symptoms, not fix the problem. At Algonquin Chiropractic Center, we specialize in pinpointing the root cause of lower back pain and using non-invasive techniques to help the body naturally heal itself.

Why Chiropractic Care is The Best Back Pain Treatment Option

Chiropractic care is the back pain treatment option with the lowest risk and highest reward. Dr. Galante doesn’t employ any treatment methods that could potentially worsen your condition. Rather, your pain will either remain or go away. And even if the treatments don’t help, we’ll refer you to other specialists better suited to treat your condition.

However, if you’re like most of the patients we see, you’ll experience a 50% improvement within the first four weeks of treatment. Most of our back pain treatment plans take 90 days to achieve pain relief (though more severe cases can take six months to a year).

Frequently Asked Questions

What Exercises and Stretches Help Back Pain?

There are several exercises and stretches you can do to help heal your back and reduce your pain. Dr. Galante generally recommends different types of exercises for each stage of the treatment process.

At the beginning of your back pain treatment, when the pain is most severe, we start with gentler stretches to avoid worsening the pain. These include the knee-to-chest stretch, the cat-camel exercise and the figure-four exercise.

Once the pain becomes more manageable, we move on to more advanced core strengthening exercises. These include:

  • Bird dog exercise
  • Fire hydrant exercise
  • Bridge exercise
  • Hip abduction
  • Neutral spine crunch

Click here to find instruction videos from Dr. Galante on how to do all these exercises in the playlist below.

After a few weeks of back pain treatment, patients are usually ready to graduate to full-body strengthening exercises. These include the single-leg deadlift, squats with a twist and low-impact aerobic exercises (such as swimming or walking). We recommend consulting an experienced chiropractor like Dr. Galante before trying strenuous exercises like this to help your lower back pain.

How Should I Position My Body to Alleviate Back Pain?

Good posture is essential for long-term low back pain relief. Over time, bad postural habits lead to chronic low back pain conditions, which can suddenly go from bad to worse without warning. Therefore, you will want to make a conscious effort to keep your body properly positioned when doing all the following everyday activities:

How to Sleep When You Have Lower Back Pain

A lot of back pain is brought on by sleeping in an awkward position. You can protect your back while you sleep by strategically positioning your body when you lie down. There are a few different positions you can try for this, but we recommend sleeping on your side with your knees bent slightly and a pillow between your knees.

You can also strategically position your body if you’re more used to sleeping on your back or stomach. Back sleepers will want to put a pillow under their knees to keep their back curved normally. Stomach sleepers should put a thin pillow under their abdomen to have the same effect.

How to Sit at a Desk to Prevent Back Pain

Working at a desk all day comes with significant risks to your lower back. The best way to prevent back pain from flaring up is by practicing what Dr. Galante calls the rule of 90s. This rule requires sitting so your elbows and hips are positioned at 90-degree angles. You also want to ensure your computer monitor is level with your field of vision and your feet are resting on the floor directly beneath you. Avoid moving your feet back beneath your desk chair because that moves your abdomen forward and hurts your back.

Another good rule to follow is the 20:8:2 rule. This rule involves sitting and working for twenty minutes, then standing for eight minutes and moving around for two minutes. If you do this every half hour, your back will be far better off at the end of the workday. We recommend getting a standing desk to work for those ten minutes you’re standing and moving around.

Practicing Good Posture When Standing and Walking

Another good way to take pressure off your lower back is by keeping your back straight, shoulders back and head up when standing or walking. Rolling your hips when walking can also cause problems, so make a conscious effort to keep your hips aligned as you go.

Your footwear can also cause problems for your back. At Algonquin Chiropractic Center, we test for improper foot alignment frequently and offer custom orthotics to correct this problem as well.

Can Lower Back Pain Be a Sign of Something Serious?

Lower back pain is usually not a sign of a serious condition. However, the pain can sometimes be a symptom of health issues like infections, tumors, kidney stones and certain types of cancer.

For this reason, it’s a good idea to see a chiropractor for lower back pain. The Doctor of Chiropractic can identify if it’s a musculoskeletal issue or something worse. If it is something worse, a chiropractor can refer you to the right specialist to get the care you need.

When Should I See a Doctor for Lower Back Pain?

You should see a doctor for your lower back pain if it persists for over a week or is severe. It’s especially crucial to see a doctor if you’re also experiencing other symptoms, such as fever, sudden weight loss or issues with bowel or bladder function.
