A Simple Fix for a Chronic Condition: Orthotics in Algonquin

Did you know that 25% of all the bones in the body are located in the feet! A very complex mechanism that enables proper locomotion and can have enormous effects on posture.

Foot Issues by Algonquin Chiropractic CenterDr. Galante is Committed to Helping You!

We are sharing this information with you to keep you informed, improve your health and well-being and help you understand critical health care information and how it impacts your health and your wallet. So what are the implications?

Faulty foot bio-mechanics can cause numerous painful conditions not only in the feet but also in the knees, hips, back and neck.

The most common distortion is when the foot rolls inward (pronation) which causes the knee to roll inward, internally rotates the hips and may cause the pelvis to be un-level with resultant spinal curvatures. The body is very good at compensating for these bio-mechanical imbalances, and sometimes for a long period of time, but when these compensatory mechanisms fail, that’s when the neck, back, knee or hip pain starts.

Try this: Stand up with you weight equal on both feet, put your index finger on your hip bones (the large bones on side of your upper leg), now stand with your weight on the inside of your foot, then roll to the outside of your foot. You will feel that bone move, now you can “feel” the connection between your foot alignment and your hips (and also your knees and low back.)

The only way to “correct” pronation is to properly support your feet with custom made orthotics (shoe inserts). Since your foot alignment is Orthotics by Algonquin Chiropractic Centerabnormal, we “bring the shoe to your foot,” to properly support the 3 arches of your feet. Orthotics will not only be beneficial for your feet, but they will also improve posture.

In my experience, after patients get used to their orthotics, which can be anywhere from immediately to 3 weeks, they LOVE them. They have never been properly supported in the past, for the first time there is proper support in all 3 arches of the foot, which will also put the knees, hips and spine in better alignment.

A few orthotic guidelines:

*Ask if your orthotic supports all 3 arches of the foot, not just the inside arch.

*They MUST be comfortable. Be very leary of hard plastic orthotics, they are often very uncomfortable.

*Wearing orthotics should go through a “break-in” period which usually doesn’t last more than a few week.

*Orthotics are very low maintenance, put them in your shoes and forget them! Proper Footwear by Algonquin Chiropractic Center

Back to Basics for Better Energy – Nutrition in Algonquin

By: Anthony Galante

We are sharing this information with you to keep you informed, improve your health and well-being and help you understand critical health care information! If you would like to learn more about nutrition in Algonquin, call us today!

Energy, The biggest leg up for motivation, inspiration, productivity and accomplishment. Without energy, everything we do becomes more of a challenge and feels more like work, even when it isn’t. But when we’re filled with energy, we have the potential to not only feel, but actually BE unstoppable. This is a big reason why there’s a Starbuck’s on every corner, or an entire fridge set aside strictly for caffeinated and sugary beverages in virtually every gas station or grocery store we visit. We live in a society of GO, GO, GO and in order to keep going, we need to keep chasing energy. Sometimes the fastest or most convenient route to energy seems like the easiest or the best, but a lot of the things we do to get ourselves energized are in truth also sucking the energy out of us.

Coffee
The cult classic in the world of energy fixes. Coffee actually doesn’t have to be bad for us, the antioxidants in java are actually something your body will love, but in moderation. The problem with coffee is that for most of us it’s not just one cup, it’s 7. It’s a burst of energy, then a crash, and if we’re not ready to crash we pour ourselves another until we make it through the day. It’s really just a bandage for fatigue and the more we drink, the more we need to get that boost. Luckily, we have other healthier options.

WaterDrinking Water by Algonquin Chiropractic Center
Sounds too obvious, right? Well, it is. Think about it, water accounts for roughly 60 percent of your body weight. All the vital systems and organs in your body require water in order to function properly. Even minor dehydration can cause those systems to slow down and make us feel sluggish. Try it, start your day with a big glass of water and anytime you start to feel fatigued have another glass or two. Most of us are dehydrated just about every day without even knowing it.

FoodNutrition by Algonquin Chiropractic Center
“You are what you eat.” A phrase most of us have heard before, and it can clearly apply to our energy level. Carbs, for instance are a great energizers. But there are two ways to eat carbs, white flour based for a quick boost followed by a quick crash, or whole grain options that give a natural you lasting energy. Consider every time you eat not just eating to fuel, but to nourish. That means also cutting back on those other quick boost/quick crash fixes like processed sugary candies and drinks, and boosting your intake of fruits and vegetables, enriched with natural sugars and, yes, WATER too.

ExerciseExercise in Algonquin by Algonquin Chiropractic Center
The benefits of exercise aren’t something to be ignored. It may seem like the smart thing to do to sleep in when we’re feeling fatigued. But really, over sleeping can actually add to our cloudiness and make it harder to snap out of. If we get ourselves out of the bed and moving, when it’s time to go to sleep again we will get a more restful sleep without adding hours of extra pillow time to the equation. Exercise also increases endorphins, a natural hormone in our body that get’s us going and feeling motivated.

Sure, there are lots more tricks for energy boosting out there, and the benefits of our basics listed above go far beyond the length of this blog. The important thing to note here is just what these are, the basics. Our basic physical needs as humans: water, food and exercise. So why, when trying to boost our bodies, wouldn’t it make sense to bring our attention and care back to the basics?

America’s Favorite Drugs

By: Anthony Galante

A nationwide study published in Pain, on painkiller abuse has revealed two drugs, hydrocodone and oxycodone, as America’s favorite painkillers.

“The epidemic of prescription painkiller abuse started in the 1990s,” said Theodore J. Cicero, PhD, lead author of the study, published in the journal Pain in 2013, and vice chairman for research and a professor of neuropharmacology in psychiatry at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. “Users think of these drugs as legal and safe compared to street drugs like heroin.”

We are sharing this information with you to keep you informed, improve your health and well-being and help you understand critical health care information and how it impacts your health and your wallet. So what are the implications?

Painkiller abuse is using a prescription painkiller outside of its intended purpose. According to the American Academy of Pain Medicine, about 9 percent of Americas Favorite Drugs Pills by Algonquin Chiropractic CenterAmericans over age 12 have abused a painkiller drug. “Exact statistics are hard to know, but about 6 to 10 percent of the population probably abuse opiate painkillers,” said Cicero. The recent study surveyed 3,520 patients in 160 addiction treatment facilities. Two opiates, hydrocodone and oxycodone, accounted for 75 percent of opiate addiction.

Although hydrocodone is a more commonly abused painkiller, oxycodone is the more preferred painkiller. That’s because oxycodone comes in a pure pill form, whereas hydrocodone is combined with other medications, usually acetaminophen (Tylenol). Users say they get a better high without the other drug.

These are not poor, inner-city drug users,” Cicero said. “They tend to be white, young, and affluent. Fifty-four percent of the users in our survey were female.”

Doctor shopping (going to multiple doctors) is a popular way to get painkillers, especially hydrocodone. Studies show that most people who do not abuse painkillers do not use up all of their prescription. Pills are commonly left in medicine cabinets, where they can be stolen, often by a friend or family member. In many cases, users get pills freely from a friend or relative. These drugs also show up commonly on the street, where they can be bought from a drug dealer,” Cicero said.

If that is not bad enough, another danger is moving from prescription painkillers to heroin. Painkiller pills are expensive,” he said. “For a person taking lots of Americas Favorite Drugs Prescription by Algonquin Chiropractic Centerpills, heroin is cheaper. We are seeing more and more pill users moving to heroin.”

Overdose deaths in the United States have tripled since 1990. Almost 75 percent of overdoses are due to prescription painkillers, and almost all start out as legal prescriptions. Painkiller abuse has been called “white collar addiction” because even doctors don’t always recognize the dangers.
As I have discussed preciously, this is a huge problem, guarantee you know someone that is abusing painkillers, this is everywhere, as high as 1 in 10 people.

What can you do?

Prevention.
Medication is designed to be used for a brief period of time until the body can heal. If medication is needed, seek professional treatment to alleviate the painful condition that required medication.

Avoid ordering medications online.
Properly dispose of unused medication, don’t leave them in your medicine cabinet where friends, relatives and children can get into them.
Be aware. This is a problem that affects millions of people, you know someone right now that is abusing prescription medication, confronting an addict can be challenging and should be done with professional help.

Scientists don’t know why the brains of women seem to respond to these brain injuries differently from those of men. But experts think it might have something to do with differences in male and female brains, or the way in which men and women are injured when their heads hit something.

Whatever the case, “you cannot treat women like you treat men,” said neuropsychologist Dave Ellemberg, an associate professor who studies brain injuries at the Proof by Algonquin Chiropractic CenterUniversity of Montreal.

Concussions have gotten tremendous attention in recent years in the world of sports, and some research has shown that female athletes suffer concussions at a higher rate than male athletes playing similar sports, the researchers noted.

In the first round of scans, the Taiwanese researchers found that the sections of the brain devoted to “working memory (short-term memory)” were more active in brain-injured men and less active in

Risk factors for recovery include a history of multiple concussions, anxiety, ADHD and migraine headache.

The biggest risk factor is usually DAD! Dads send kids back too early because “they are fine” and “I played after I had my bell rung.” If you are a dad, stop it, times Proof1 by Algonquin Chiropractic Centerare different and you could be causing your child more problems.

After a concussion, physical and mental rest is the recommended treatment, do not give OTC anti-inflammatories in the first 72 hours, seek immediate medical treatment with loss of conciousness, vomiting, worsening of symptoms, symptoms that are not improving, seizure and for children under 2 years of age, any scalp swelling or abnormality in the way they usually behave.

The Benefits of Vitamin B

Did You Know…

The Benefits of Vitamin B by Algonquin Chiropractic Center

There seems to be a constant stream of negative press regarding nutritional supplements; however, studies like these are buried and never come out in the press.

Mainstream medicine would love for every citizen to stop all their nutrition programs and get on drug therapy for the rest of your lives.

Fortunately, you are smarter than that.

This study is a great example of how effective even a simple nutrition program can be. Dr. Christen of Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School conducted a 7 year study of over 5000 women.

The specific nutrients used were Folic Acid, and Vitamins B6 and B12, the beneficial
effects of started at 2 years and continued throughout the study.

How does it work? Researchers feel the beneficial effects may be due to lowering homocystiene (homocystiene is also a risk factor for heart disease), antioxidant effects and improved function of the blood vessels of the eye.

Nutrition can save your sight….. and your life!
