Walnuts to Improve Brain Function?

Walnuts have been shown to improve memory, cognition and neuronal effects related to oxidative stress (OS) and inflammation (INF) in animals and human trials.

We are sharing this information with you to keep you informed, improve your health and well-being and help you understand critical health care information and how it impacts your health and your wallet. So what are the implications?

Walnut looks like the brain. The folds and wrinkles of a walnut resembles the brain. The shape of the nut even approximates the body part, looking like it has left and right hemispheres. And it’s no surprise walnuts are nicknamed “brain food”—they have a very high content of omega-3 fatty acids, which help support brain function.Walnuts Improve Brain Function by Algonquin Chiropractic Center

Walnuts develop over three dozen neuro-transmitters for brain function. They may also help head off dementia. A recent study found that walnut extract broke down the protein-based plaques associated with Alzheimer’s disease. They found walnuts reversed some signs of brain aging in rats. Walnuts also appear to enhance signaling within the brain and encourage new messaging links between brain cells

Fibrillar amyloid beta-protein (Abeta) is the principal component of amyloid plaques in the brains of patients with Alzheimer’s disease. Scientific studies suggest that walnuts may reduce the risk or delay the onset of Alzheimer’s disease by maintaining Abeta in the soluble form. Basically, walnuts had inhibited the protein from becoming solid. It is proposed that polyphenolic compounds (such as flavonoids) present in walnuts may be responsible for its “anti-amyloidogenic” activity.

What can you do in addition to eating walnuts?

According to the Mayo Clinic:

Evidence suggests that the same factors that put you at risk of heart disease also may increase the chance that you’ll develop Alzheimer’s.

Examples include:

Lack of exercise
Smoking
High blood pressure
High blood cholesterol
Elevated homocysteine levels
Poorly controlled diabetes
A diet lacking in fruits and vegetables

We can discuss many more options such as weight control, nutritional supplementation and beneficial fats because lifestyle management is crucial in preventing chronic degenerative diseases.

The general manager goes on to say that chiropractors are not only meeting but exceeding, customer service expectations of patients.

These finding are consistent with a Consumer Reports survey in May of 2009 that found that 88% of chiropractic patients said it helped “a lot.”

Sleep and Be Well

*Sleep is increasingly recognized as important to public health, with sleep insufficiency linked to motor vehicle crashes, industrial disasters, and medical and other occupational errors.

*Unintentionally falling asleep, nodding off while driving, and having difficulty performing daily tasks because of sleepiness all may contribute to these hazardous outcomes.Sleep by Algonquin Chiropractic Center

*Persons experiencing sleep insufficiency are also more likely to suffer from chronic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, depression, and obesity, as well as from cancer, increased mortality, and reduced quality of life and productivity.

We are sharing this information with you to keep you informed, improve your health and well-being and help you understand critical health care information and how it impacts your health and your wallet. So what are the implications?

In our society we tend to wear sleep deprivation as a “badge of honor,” as we now know good, quality sleep is essential for good health.

During sleep we progress thru Stages 1-5, with Stage 5 being REM sleep.  The first REM cycle starts about 90 minutes into sleep, each REM cycle gets longer as you sleep.  Most people require 4-5 periods of REM, without it you have a decrease in cognitive function and a decrease in the ability to learn complex tasks.

How do we get more quality sleep?  We cannot cover such a large topic in this space so here are a few tips.

1.  Get evaluated for sleep apnea, especially if you are a voracious snorer.

2. Control allergies, asthma, upper respiratory infections – difficulty breathing will make sleep difficult.

3. Try to keep bedtime and wake up time the same most days.

4. Control pain – it will be very difficult to get comfortable when you are in pain.  Ice, heat, heat patches, topical analgesics and sleep positions specific to your condition may be helpful.
5. Find a comfortable mattress, there is not one mattress that is right for everyone.

6. Keep your blood sugar steady with small, frequent, high protein meals throughout the day.
7.  Here are a couple links with sleep tips:

Pregnant mothers-to-be need to be especially cautious of their diet and medication.

In this study, researchers determined that acetaminophen may act as an “endocrine disrupter” meaning it effects estrogen activity in the body which may effect the development of the fetus’s brain.

We should all be cautious about the foods, chemicals and drugs we put in our bodies, especially pregnant women.  Many health experts are recommending non-pharmacological ways to deal with back pain, neck pain and headaches during pregnancy and after.

What are those ways?

  1.  Chiropractic for pregnancy has been shown in numerous studies to quickly and safely decrease pain and decrease dependence on medication, we have numerous special techniques that are used specifically for pregnant women.
  1.  Massage can be helpful to decrease pain and increase flexibility, massage in conjunction with Chiropractic care can speed recovery and provide lasting relief.
  1.  Anti-inflammatory diet and nutrition – implementing these lifestyle changes can lower “silent inflammation” and decrease your risk of chronic disease processes.
  1. Topical analgesics such as Biofreeze, stimulate specific nerve fibers in the skin to “block” pain signals from going to the brain.  Biofreeze works very well but please, do not use it if you are pregnant.
  1.  Exercise such as walking, yoga, tai chi, biking and swimming relieve stress, improve mood and control pain.

Above are a few tips to control your pain and keep you off drugs that may be dangerous to you and your unborn child, implement some or all and see how the quality of your life improves!

Spinal Stenosis and Chiropractic

Spinal Stenosis:

No differences between surgical and conservative care!

According to the Journal Spine: Spinal stenosis patients showed no significant differences between the two groups (surgical and conservative care) in terms of pain, functioning or disability.

We are sharing this information with you to keep you informed, improve your health and well-being and help you understand critical health care information and how it impacts your health and your wallet. So what are the implications?

Spinal Stenosis X-RaySurgery and more conservative treatments provide similar long-term outcomes for people with spinal stenosis, a new study suggests. The study included more than 650 spinal stenosis patients who had surgery or received nonsurgical treatment such as chiropractic, physical therapy or medications.

Both surgery and more conservative treatments were safe, according to the researchers. Of the patients who had surgery, 18 percent had repeat surgery for recurrent spinal stenosis within eight years, said study leader Dr. Jon Lurie and colleagues in a journal news release.

The findings provide important information for patients and doctors when considering treatments for spinal stenosis, the researchers said.

Consider COX Technique for stenosis.  A non-surgical, hands-on, decompression technique that gently relieves the pressure on sensitive discs and nerves.  Excellent results.

Home exercises such as the cat/camel, knee/chest and sit and reach may be beneficial between visits for stenosis patients, swimming is usually helpful also.

An anti-inflammatory diet may help in the long term as well as targeted nutritional supplements to control inflammation and promote soft tissue healing.

These are just a few of the techniques we use to get people out of pain and on with their active lifestyle!
