So what are the implications?

Professional athletes demand the best treatments and will often go outside of their NFL team physicians to get it. (Remember when Jim McMahon would bring his own acupuncturist on road trip back in the 80’s?)

Now EVERY NFL team has a chiropractor on staff. Why?

It is not because the head Orthopedic is a fan of chiropractors, or the head trainer or the coach or even the team massage therapist (they all usually do not like chiropractic).

It is because chiropractic helps athletes heal faster and stay that way longer so you can perform at your best.

You and I won’t be scoring a touchdown in front of 70,000 fans anytime soon but that does not mean you cannot enjoy the same health benefits that the pros do.

A Simple Fix for a Chronic Condition: Orthotics in Algonquin

By: Anthony Galante

A Simple Fix for a Chronic Condition: Orthotics in Algonquin

Did you know that 25% of all the bones in the body are located in the feet! A very complex mechanism that enables proper locomotion and can have enormous effects on posture.

Foot Issues by Algonquin Chiropractic CenterDr. Galante is Committed to Helping You!

We are sharing this information with you to keep you informed, improve your health and well-being and help you understand critical health care information and how it impacts your health and your wallet. So what are the implications?

Faulty foot bio-mechanics can cause numerous painful conditions not only in the feet but also in the knees, hips, back and neck.

The most common distortion is when the foot rolls inward (pronation) which causes the knee to roll inward, internally rotates the hips and may cause the pelvis to be un-level with resultant spinal curvatures. The body is very good at compensating for these bio-mechanical imbalances, and sometimes for a long period of time, but when these compensatory mechanisms fail, that’s when the neck, back, knee or hip pain starts.

Try this: Stand up with you weight equal on both feet, put your index finger on your hip bones (the large bones on side of your upper leg), now stand with your weight on the inside of your foot, then roll to the outside of your foot. You will feel that bone move, now you can “feel” the connection between your foot alignment and your hips (and also your knees and low back.)

The only way to “correct” pronation is to properly support your feet with custom made orthotics (shoe inserts). Since your foot alignment is Orthotics by Algonquin Chiropractic Centerabnormal, we “bring the shoe to your foot,” to properly support the 3 arches of your feet. Orthotics will not only be beneficial for your feet, but they will also improve posture.

In my experience, after patients get used to their orthotics, which can be anywhere from immediately to 3 weeks, they LOVE them. They have never been properly supported in the past, for the first time there is proper support in all 3 arches of the foot, which will also put the knees, hips and spine in better alignment.

A few orthotic guidelines:

*Ask if your orthotic supports all 3 arches of the foot, not just the inside arch.

*They MUST be comfortable. Be very leary of hard plastic orthotics, they are often very uncomfortable.

*Wearing orthotics should go through a “break-in” period which usually doesn’t last more than a few week.

*Orthotics are very low maintenance, put them in your shoes and forget them! Proper Footwear by Algonquin Chiropractic Center

Algonquin Nutrition Services: Smoking Cessation

By: Anthony Galante

Did You Know…

At one time, almost half of the population of the United States smoked (roughly 42 percent in the mid 1960s). Today, that number has been decreased to less than 20 percent as people become more and more aware of the dangers of smoking. We realize quitting is not easy, which is why we offer smoking cessation assistance as part of our Algonquin nutrition services.

We are sharing this information with you to keep you informed, improve your health and well-being and help you understand critical health care information and how it impacts your health and your wallet. So what are the implications?

Health Effects of Smoking
What is the #1 cause of preventable disease and death in the world? Cigarette smoking. Just how dangerous are cigarettes?
• 69 known cancer causing chemicals are in cigarette smoke
• In all, the smoke contains over 7,000 chemicals
• Lung disease makes up 73 percent of smoking-related conditions in smokers
• In addition to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and lung cancer, smoking has also been linked to other cancers and various heart diseases and/or conditions

How Dangerous is Secondhand Smoke?
For years, secondhand smoke has been the topic of controversy. Over the years, legislation has been put in place to regulate smoking in public places due to its dangers.
• A report released by the Surgeon General in 2006 states there is no “risk-free” exposure to second hand smoke. In fact, exposure to second hand smoke put those exposed at risk of heart health issues.
• It is estimated that as many as 69,600 deaths occur each year due to exposure of secondhand smoke.

How to Quit Smoking
We realize this is not an easy thing to do. Nicotine is very addicting and most people fail on their first attempt at quitting. This is why we offer smoking cessation as part of our Algonquin nutrition services. Our service includes both chiropractic care and nutritional services to help you break the hold that tobacco has on you.

What to Expect During First Chiropractic Visit to a Lake in the Hills Chiropractor

By: Anthony Galante

Seeing a new doctor can be a bit intimidating, especially when you are in pain and the worst possible outcome is in the back of your mind. Knowing what to expect, while not eliminating your pain, can make the visit a bit less stressful. So, for those of you headed to a Lake in the Hills chiropractor’s office for the first time, below you will find what happens during the “average” first-time visit.

Dr. Galante is Committed to Helping You!
We are sharing this information with you to keep you informed, improve your health and well-being and help you understand critical health care information and how it impacts your health and your wallet.

Arrival at the Office
Upon checking in, you will be asked to fill out some paperwork. This is standard for any new patient and should only take a few minutes to complete. In addition to the standard Front-Office-Algonquin-Chiropractic-Centerbackground information a new doctor requires to set up your account, you will see some of the following questions:
• Where is the pain located?
• When did you first experience the pain?
• Do you know what caused the pain (the result of activity, injury, or existing)?
• How would you rate the pain on a scale of 1 to 10?
• Is the pain consistent or does it come and go?
• Are there certain activities that make the pain worse?
• What are you currently doing to alleviate the pain?

Meeting the Chiropractor for the First Time
Once your paperwork is completed, you will meet the doctor and have your initial exam. The doctor will review your answers and more than likely ask a few more questions before the actual exam takes place. The doctor will then check you for things such as muscle tone, area tenderness, strength and flexibility, to name just a few.

Treatment
Once your Lake in the Hills chiropractor has completed the initial exam and/or testing, he or she will come up with a chiropractic treatment plan and review it with you. In some cases, you will not receive this plan immediately, as the doctor may require outside processing of some tests or even a consultation with your primary physician before proceeding.

Debunking Myths about Chiropractors in Algonquin, IL

By: Anthony Galante

Did You Know…

There are many myths out there concerning chiropractic care.

Dr. Galante is Committed to Helping You!

We are sharing this information with you to keep you informed, improve your health and well-being and help you understand critical health care information and how it impacts your health and your wallet.

If you live in the Lake in the Hills or Algonquin areas and are considering visiting a local chiropractor for relief of problems such as migraines or neck and back pain, you have every right to do your due diligence to find out if seeing this type of doctor is safe. Unfortunately, there is a LOT of bad information available on the Internet (and not just about chiropractors) that people take as gospel.

Debunking Myths about Chiropractors in Algonquin, IL by Algonquin Chiropractic Center

Some of the most popular myths are listed below:
1.) Chiropractic treatments are dangerous – if there is one “myth” that scares patients the most, this one is it. Seeing a chiropractor is no more dangerous than seeing any other type of doctor or receiving any other type of treatment. For instance, did you know that technically, taking an aspirin is more dangerous than receiving an adjustment? In fact, aspirin has about 100 times more adverse reactions than chiropractic adjustments!

2.) “Regular” doctors and chiropractors do not get along – again, this could not be further from the truth. If you have read any of our previous posts, you know we often recommend seeking out the opinion of your general practitioner prior to seeking treatment. The fact is that we work with many local doctors to develop an ideal plan of treatment that coordinates the patient’s general treatment with his or her chiropractic treatments. It is also worth noting that many “regular” doctors will perform chiropractic techniques on patients in their care on a limited basis.

3.) Chiropractic adjustments are painful – millions of people seek adjustments every year. Do you really think they would do this if the treatment caused them more pain? The reality is that many patients feel almost immediate relief after and even during the adjustment. And yes, some patients may feel a bit of discomfort, but this is often only in severe cases requiring extensive treatment.

4.) I can adjust myself – this is just flat out dangerous. One significant aspect of spinal manipulation is the positioning of the doctor and the patient. Being in an awkward position and trying to “adjust yourself” will often cause more harm than good. Furthermore, cracking or popping your neck is not necessarily performing an adjustment. In fact, doing so may actually cause future problems in your back and neck areas.

5.) Chiropractic treatments never end – seeing a chiropractor is a choice you make, not one you are required to do or continue. Often, the relief felt after an adjustment is because the chiropractor is fixing the damage caused by your everyday life and activities. For instance, if you do roadwork for a living and felt relief after treatment yet continued to do roadwork every day afterwards, chances are you will once again feel the pains that sent you to the doctor in the first place. And, after treatment, you will once again enjoy relief.

Be very careful what you read and seek out legitimate sources of information, especially when it comes to medical care. If you want to see a chiropractor in Algonquin, IL, there is nothing wrong with researching local doctors and even asking your primary for a recommendation. Ideally, all of your doctors will work together to ensure a healthier and less painful life for you.

Remember health is a journey and not a destination. What you do in the practice of health care will go miles and pay dividends over time.
